SMYBB Rules and Regulations

A (7th/8th grade) Division

Time outs: 3 timeouts per game and can be used in any quarter at the coach’s discretion. 

Overtime: 

  • ONE overtime period for all regular season games. If score remains tied at the end of this overtime period, game will end in a tie. 
  • two minutes with one minute of stop time, one time-out per team 
  • team fouls will carry over from 4th quarter  

Timing: 

  • ten minute running clock; stop clock last one minute of the fourth quarter if within 15 points 

Playing Time/Substitutions: 

  • players will play a minimum of 2 quarters per game, one full quarter per half
  • each player must sit at least one full quarter  
  • no player should sit 2 consecutive quarters
  • no substitutions in the first 3 quarters; free substitutions in 4th quarter

Division Regulations: 

  • no back court press is permitted in the first half 
  • full court press is allowed in the 2nd half (and overtime) if within 15 point differential; if point differential exceeds 15 points ONLY the trailing team may press until the lead is within 15 again, at which point both teams may press.  
  • A Division boys games will be played with a 29.5oz basketball 
  • A Division girls games will be played with a 28.5oz basketball

B (5th/6th grade) Division

Division Regulations: 

  • games will be played with a 28.5oz basketball
  • at start of each game, each player present will shoot one free-throw which will count toward the 1st quarter score 
    • opposing coach will count and give final score to scorekeeper 
    • if players are absent that team will get fewer shot attempts 
  • transition rule 
    • once a team secures the rebound or inbounds pass and is advancing in transition, defensive players must retreat behind the 3-point line.    
    • all defensive players must stay below the 3-point line until the initial pass is made in that possession; offense has 5 seconds after crossing half court to initiate the entry pass
    • defense cannot steal the FIRST entry pass outside the 3-point line, however if the initial pass is made to a spot inside the 3-point line, it can be stolen
    • after the initial “free” pass is made, full half-court defense is permitted 
  • full court press is allowed in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter + overtime, if within 15 point differential; if point differential exceeds 15 points ONLY the trailing team may press until the lead is within 15 again, at which point both teams may press.  
  • a five second key violation will be enforced 
  • twelve foot free throw line will be used 

SMYBB Rules and Regulations

PW (1st/2nd grade) Division

Time outs: There are no timeouts although the clock will be stopped at the halfway point of the 4th quarter to allow for quick substitutions. 

Overtime: no overtime

Timing: 

  • ten minute running clock, first four quarters 
  • stop time the last one minute of the fourth quarter if within 15 points 
  • one minute rest between quarters, two minutes at half time 

Forfeit:  The league will not require a team to forfeit due to a lack of eligible players. There will be no make-up or rescheduled games. 

Playing Time/Substitutions: 

  • players will play a minimum of 2 quarters per game, one full quarter per half
  • each player must sit at least one full quarter  
  • no player should sit 2 consecutive quarters
  • no substitutions in the first 3 quarters; 4th quarter clock will stop at halfway point for quick subs

Regulations: 

  • coaches will officiate their games
  • games will be played with a 27.5oz basketball 
  • rim will be lowered to 8 feet to aid players in developing proper shooting techniques 
  • at start of each game, each player present will shoot one free-throw which will count toward the 1st quarter score 
    • opposing coach will count and give final score to scorekeeper 
    • if players are absent that team will get fewer shot attempts 
  • no back court press is permitted 
    • defense MUST retreat behind the 3-point arc once the offense is in possession of the ball 
  • teams MUST play man to man defense 
  • no defense can be played outside the 3 point line except in the case of a loose ball 
  • no key violation will be enforced 
  • score will be zeroed out at the start of each quarter
